Choosing a home EV charger is one of the most important decisions you will make as an electric vehicle owner. The right charger will future-proof your home, reduce your running costs, and make charging as convenient as possible. The wrong one will leave you with a device that does not fit your car, your home, or your lifestyle.

This guide compares the best home EV chargers available in the UK in 2026, covering features, charging speeds, smart capabilities, price, and which type of driver each one suits best.

How Fast Do Home EV Chargers Charge?

Before comparing models, it helps to understand charging speeds:

3.6kW (single-phase, slow): adds roughly 12–15 miles of range per hour. Overnight only.

7kW (single-phase, fast): adds roughly 25–30 miles per hour. The most common home charger speed. Charges most EVs from empty in 8–10 hours.

22kW (three-phase, fast): adds roughly 75–80 miles per hour. Most UK homes cannot support 22kW without a three-phase supply upgrade.

For most homeowners, a 7kW charger is the right choice. The models listed below are 7kW.

Zappi by myenergi: Best for Solar Panel Owners

The Zappi is widely considered the best smart home EV charger for households with solar panels. Its standout feature is the ability to charge your EV using surplus solar or wind energy first; reducing your electricity costs and your carbon footprint simultaneously.

Key features:

Key features:

Price: approximately £700-£900 supplied and installed.

Best for: homeowners on Octopus Energy or other time-of-use tariffs who want to minimise charging costs automatically.

Pod Point Solo 3: Best Value for Reliable Everyday Charging

The Pod Point Solo 3 is one of the UK’s most installed home EV chargers. It is owned by EDF Energy and is a straightforward, reliable, and easy-to-use charger that gets the job done without complexity.

Key features:

Price: approximately £1,200-£1,600 supplied and installed.

Best for: homeowners who want a visually striking charger that works as a design feature, not just a utility.

Which Home EV Charger Should You Choose?

Solar panels and want to maximise green energy: Zappi by myenergi

Tethered vs Untethered EV Chargers

Tethered chargers have the charging cable permanently attached. Convenient as you do not need to carry a cable with you, but the cable must be compatible with your car’s connector.

Untethered (socketed) chargers have a socket into which you plug your own cable. More flexible if you change cars or have a car with a different connector type.

Most UK homes with a single EV benefit from a tethered charger for convenience. Households with two EVs of different types may prefer an untethered socket.

Home EV Charger Installation Cost UK 2026

The cost of installing a home EV charger in the UK typically ranges from £650 to £1,600 depending on the charger model and the complexity of the installation.

Factors that affect the cost:

If you need an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) in London, one of the first questions you will have is: how much does it cost?

EICR prices in London vary depending on property size, age of the installation, and the electrician you choose. In this guide we break down exactly what you can expect to pay in 2026, what drives the price up or down, and how to make sure you are getting a fair, thorough inspection from a qualified electrician.

EICR Costs at Sky Electrical. London and Surrey (2026)

At Sky Electrical, we provide fixed-price EICRs with no hidden costs. All prices include the full physical inspection, testing, and your written EICR certificate issued on the same day.

● 1-bedroom flat: from £288 (exc. VAT)

● 2-bedroom house: from £336 (exc. VAT)

● 3-bedroom house: from £375 (exc. VAT)

● 4-bedroom house: from £450 (exc. VAT)

● 5+ bedroom house: from £500 (exc. VAT)

● Commercial premises and 6+ bedroom properties: contact us for a quote.

For an accurate quote specific to your property, call us on 020 8894 1799 or book a free survey online.

Why Some EICR Prices Are Lower and What to Watch Out For

You will find EICR quotes online ranging from £80 to £150, particularly from sole traders or booking platforms. In some cases these may represent genuine value. In others, a lower price reflects a faster, less thorough inspection, a report issued without a full physical test, or work carried out by an electrician who is not registered with a recognised body such as NICEIC or NAPIT.

At Sky Electrical, our prices reflect the standard of work we deliver. Every inspection is carried out by a directly employed, NICEIC-approved electrician, not a subcontractor. You receive a full written report on the same day, backed by our 6-year workmanship guarantee. For landlords in particular, where an EICR is a legal document that must withstand scrutiny from local authorities and tenants, the quality of the report matters as much as the price.

Sky Electrical has been carrying out electrical inspections across London and Surrey since 1958 with over 65 years of experience. We are rated 9.9/10 on Checkatrade and 5 stars on Google, with more than 800+ verified customer reviews. We hold full NICEIC approval, the UK’s highest electrical accreditation. When you book an EICR with us, you are choosing a company with a long, documented track record of delivering thorough, reliable inspections, not a cheaper service that cuts corners to compete on price.

Average EICR Costs Across London (2026 Market Overview)

For context, London EICR prices across the market are typically 20-35% higher than the UK national average, reflecting higher electrician day rates and the cost of operating in the capital. General market rates from other providers are:

● 1-2 bedroom flat: £120 – £175

● 3-4 bedroom house: £175 – £250

● 5 bedroom house: £250 – £300

● 5+ bedroom or large property: £300 – £400

● Small commercial premises: £250 – £450

● Large commercial or industrial: £450 – £800+

These prices include the inspection, testing, and written report. They do not include any remedial work. If faults are found, additional costs apply.

EICR Inspections in Surrey: Guildford, Richmond, Twickenham, Wimbledon

Sky Electrical carries out EICR inspections across the full Surrey area, with local electricians serving Guildford, Richmond, Twickenham, Wimbledon, Kingston upon Thames, Wandsworth, Cobham, Esher, and Berkshire.

All Surrey inspections are carried out by directly employed, NICEIC-approved electricians, with your full written EICR certificate issued on the same day. Contact us for a fixed price quote for your Surrey property.

What Affects the Cost of an EICR?

Several factors influence how long an inspection takes and therefore the final price:

Property Size

The number of circuits directly affects inspection time. A 5-bedroom house can take 4–6 hours; a 1- bedroom flat under 2 hours.

Age of the Installation

Older properties, particularly those built before the 1970s with original wiring, require more thorough testing and are more likely to have faults requiring investigation.

Accessibility

If the electrician cannot easily access the consumer unit, ceiling spaces, or outdoor circuits, the inspection will take longer.

Number of Consumer Units

Some larger properties or houses converted into flats have more than one consumer unit, adding to inspection time.

Condition of the Installation

Properties with a history of substandard electrical work may require more detailed investigation.

Location Within London

Central London postcodes often attract a small premium over outer London and South-West London locations due to travel time and parking.

Does an EICR Cost Include Remedial Work?

No. The EICR inspection and report are always priced separately from any repair work identified.

If your EICR result is Unsatisfactory, meaning C1 (danger present, immediate action required) or C2 (potentially dangerous, urgent action required) items have been found; you will need those issues repaired before the property can be given a satisfactory certificate. Common remedial costs include:

● Replacing an outdated consumer unit (fuse box): £600 – £1,200

● Rewiring a circuit: £150 – £400 per circuit

● Adding RCD protection: £150 – £400

● Re-inspection fee: £50 – £100

Sky Electrical Electrician Rates for Remedial Work

For any remedial work following an EICR, Sky Electrical charges transparent hourly rates with no hidden costs:

Local rates (Surrey and surrounding London areas within 3 miles of our Twickenham base):

● Initial hour / call out: £97.50 + VAT

● Subsequent hours: £85 + VAT per hour

Regular rates (London and Surrey, over 3 miles from our base):

● Initial hour / call out: £125 + VAT

● Subsequent hours: £95 + VAT per hour

All remedial work is carried out by the same directly employed NICEIC-approved engineers who completed your inspection, meaning a faster turnaround and no need to find a separate contractor. We provide a written quote for all remedial work before any repairs begin.

How Often Do You Need an EICR?

● Landlords: every 5 years, or at the start of each new tenancy. This is a legal requirement under the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020

● Owner-occupied homes: every 10 years (NICEIC recommended)

● Commercial premises: every 5 years

● After major electrical work, flooding, fire, or structural alterations: as soon as possible

How to Get a Fair EICR Quote in London

1. Always use a NICEIC or NAPIT registered electrician. Check registration at niceic.com or napit.org.uk

2. Provide full details when requesting a quote: property type, number of bedrooms, age of the property, and whether it is currently tenanted

3. Ask what is included: confirm you will receive a full written report on the day, how long the inspection will take, and whether parking costs are included

4. Ask about their remediation process and pricing if faults are found. A good electrician will be transparent about this upfront

Your fuse box is one of the most important parts of your home’s electrics. But most homeowners never think about it until something goes wrong.

In this guide, we explain the warning signs that mean your fuse box needs replacing, how much a replacement costs in London, and what to expect on the day.

Sky Electrical is a NICEIC-approved contractor based in Twickenham. We replace fuse boxes and consumer units for homeowners across London and Surrey.

What Is the Difference Between a Fuse Box and a Consumer Unit?

The terms ‘fuse box’ and ‘consumer unit’ refer to the same thing. This is the box that controls and distributes electricity around your home. However, they are different in terms of age and safety.

Older homes have traditional fuse boxes. These use wire fuses that blow when there is a fault. Modern homes have consumer units. These use circuit breakers and RCD (residual current device) protection, which are far safer.

If your property still has an old fuse box with ceramic wire fuses or a wooden back, it is almost certainly time for an upgrade.

7 Signs Your Fuse Box Needs Replacing

1. Your fuse box is more than 25 years old

Electrical standards change over time. A fuse box installed before 2000 may not meet current regulations. It may lack the RCD protection that is now standard in all new consumer units.

2. You have a metal or wooden fuse board

Old-style metal or wooden fuse boards with ceramic fuse holders are no longer compliant with modern wiring regulations. They offer much less protection than a modern consumer unit.

3. Fuses keep blowing or breakers keep tripping

If a single fuse blows or breaker trips occasionally, that can be normal. But if it happens often, especially on multiple circuits; it suggests something is wrong. This could mean your wiring is overloaded or there is a fault that needs investigating.

4. You are having electrical work done

If you are adding a new kitchen, a home extension, or an EV charger, your electrician may recommend upgrading your consumer unit at the same time. This is often more cost-effective than doing it separately later.

5. Your home has received an unsatisfactory EICR

An EICR inspection often flags old consumer units as the main reason for failing. If your property receives an unsatisfactory EICR report, a consumer unit upgrade is often the remedy.

6. You are buying or selling a property

Mortgage lenders and insurers may require an up-to-date EICR. If the survey or EICR flags the fuse box, upgrading it before exchange can speed up the sale.

7. You notice signs of burning or scorching

Scorch marks around your fuse box, a burning smell, or discolouration around sockets are signs of a potentially dangerous fault. Switch off the main switch and call a qualified electrician immediately.

Consumer Unit Replacement Cost in London (2026)

The cost of replacing a fuse box in London is higher than the UK national average. A consumer unit (fuse box) upgrade typically costs from £650-£1,300 (exc. VAT). The main factors that affect the price are the size of your property and the number of circuits.

Please note that prices vary. This price range is a rough guide and is dependant on specific requirements, and the amount of fuse boards.

Sky Electrical offers 0% APR finance on all electrical work, so you can spread the cost with monthly payments and no interest charges.

Please contact our friendly team to get a free site survey and quote.

What Happens During a Consumer Unit Replacement?

Here is what to expect on the day:

  1. The electrician will survey your current fuse box and circuits before starting any work.
  2. The power to your home will need to be switched off. This usually takes between 4 and 10 hours, depending on the size of your property.
  3. The old fuse box is removed and the new consumer unit is installed. All circuits are reconnected, labelled, and tested.
  4. The electrician carries out a series of electrical tests to confirm everything is safe and working correctly.
  5. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate. This is a legal document. Keep it safe.

You will need to be home for the duration of the job. Plan for the power to be off for most of the day. We recommend having somewhere warm to sit and making sure any food in your fridge or freezer is covered.

Is It a Legal Requirement to Replace Your Fuse Box?

There is no law that says you must upgrade your fuse box by a specific date if you are an owner-occupier. However, your home insurance policy may require you to have up-to-date wiring.

For landlords, the rules are stricter. An EICR must be carried out every five years. An old fuse box without RCD protection will almost always result in a C2 fault code, which means you are legally required to carry out remedial work within 28 days.

Even if there is no legal obligation, upgrading an old fuse board significantly improves the safety of your home and its occupants.

Are There Grants for a Free Fuse Box Replacement in the UK?

In some cases, households on low incomes or certain benefits may be eligible for free or subsidised electrical work through the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme. This scheme is administered through energy companies such as British Gas, E.ON, and Octopus Energy.

However, these grants are means-tested and have specific eligibility requirements. Not all properties or circumstances qualify. We recommend checking directly with your energy supplier or visiting the government’s ECO4 website for the most up-to-date eligibility criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a fuse box replacement take?

Most residential fuse box replacements take between four and eight hours. Larger properties with more circuits take longer. We will give you an accurate estimate during your free site survey.

Can I stay in my home during the replacement?

Yes, but the power will be off for most of the day. You will not have lighting, heating, or kitchen appliances during the work. We always try to complete the job in one day so your disruption is minimal.

Do I need a new fuse box if I’m getting an EV charger installed?

Not always. Your electrician will check whether your existing consumer unit can support the additional load. In some cases, an upgrade is needed, particularly if your current fuse board is old or already running at capacity.

What is an RCD and why does my consumer unit need one?

An RCD, or Residual Current Device, is a safety device that cuts off the power in milliseconds if it detects a fault. It protects against electric shocks and reduces the risk of electrical fires. All new consumer units must include RCD protection under the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).

How do I know if my fuse box is old?

Signs include ceramic fuse holders with wire fuses, a wooden back, no trip switches (just fuses), or an overall appearance that looks 20+ years old. If you are unsure, a qualified electrician can inspect it and advise you.

Good garden lighting turns an ordinary outdoor space into something special. It adds ambience, improves safety, boosts security, and extends the time you can spend outdoors.

In this guide, we share the best garden lighting ideas for homes in London and Surrey. We cover every type of outdoor light and explain what works well in different gardens. From small urban courtyards to large Surrey properties.

Sky Electrical designs and installs bespoke garden lighting for homeowners across South-West London and Surrey. All our work is carried out by NICEIC-approved electricians.

Why Invest in Professional Garden Lighting?

Many homeowners start with solar-powered garden lights from a garden centre. These are fine for a quick fix, but they fade quickly. They offer poor light quality, and rarely look as good as a professionally designed scheme.

A professional garden lighting installation uses mains-powered LED fittings. These are far brighter, more reliable, and last for years. A professional electrician can also design the layout to complement your garden, placing lights where they will have the most impact.

The benefits of professional garden lighting include:

Types of Garden Lighting. Which Is Right for Your Garden?

Pathway and Driveway Lights

Pathway lights line walkways, driveways, and borders. They are practical and decorative. Low-level bollard lights or flush ground lights work well along a straight path. For a more natural look, consider small spike lights placed among planting.

In London and Surrey gardens, pathway lighting is especially popular on longer driveways and brick steps. The key is to avoid overly bright lights; soft, warm white (around 2700K) creates a welcoming atmosphere without glare.

Uplighting for Trees and Shrubs

Uplighting is one of the most dramatic effects you can create in a garden. A small spike-mounted LED uplight placed at the base of a tree creates a stunning focal point after dark. The larger the tree, the wider the beam angle you need.

Uplighting also works well on brick walls, garden sculptures, and architectural features. This technique is particularly popular in Richmond and Wimbledon, where large gardens often have mature trees worth showcasing.

Wall-Mounted Lanterns and Sconces

Wall lights on the outside of your house add warmth and kerb appeal. Lantern-style fittings suit period properties common in South-West London and Surrey. For a more contemporary look, sleek rectangular sconces in brushed aluminium or black work well.

A good wall light placement for most homes includes one either side of the front door and lights flanking the garage or gate.

Decking and Patio Lights

Patio and decking areas benefit from layered lighting. Combine overhead string lights or a pendant light with low-level deck lights set into the boards or risers.

For outdoor dining areas, a warm overhead light creates ambience. Keep it on a dimmer so you can lower the level when you want a relaxed atmosphere. Avoid blue-white LEDs on patios, warm white at 2700–3000K is far more flattering.

Garden Room and Pergola Lighting

Garden rooms have become one of the most popular home improvements in London and Surrey. Lighting a garden room well requires both functional lighting for work or exercise, and atmospheric lighting for evenings.

Outside the garden room, string lights or festoon bulbs along a pergola create a relaxed party atmosphere. Inside, recessed LED downlights on a dimmer are the most versatile option.

Security Lighting and Floodlights

Security lights are a practical necessity for most London homes. A motion-activated floodlight at the rear of a property can deter intruders and make the garden safer at night.

Modern LED security lights consume very little energy. Look for models with adjustable sensitivity and a timer to avoid unnecessary triggering. Position them high enough to cover the area effectively but not so high that they light up a neighbour’s bedroom.

Fence and Border Lighting

Low-voltage lights fitted along the top or base of a fence add depth to a garden. They highlight the garden’s boundary without overpowering it. This works especially well in smaller gardens where you want to create the illusion of more space.

LED strip lighting fixed along the underside of a fence cap or along a raised bed edge creates a modern, floating effect. This is increasingly popular in contemporary London gardens.

Modern Garden Lighting Ideas for 2026

The trend in garden lighting has moved away from visible fittings and towards minimal, integrated lights that blend into the landscape. Here are the key modern garden lighting ideas for this year:

Garden Patio Lighting Ideas

A well-lit patio extends the usable hours of your outdoor space into the evening. The best patio lighting schemes combine three layers:

  1. Ambient light. Overhead lighting such as a wall lantern, hanging pendant, or string lights to provide general illumination
  2. Task light. A direct light source over an outdoor dining table or BBQ area
  3. Accent light. Low-level lights in planters, along borders, or set into the patio edge to add depth and interest.

For most London and Surrey patios, we recommend a mains-powered scheme with a weatherproof smart switch or outdoor dimmer. This lets you control the mood from your phone or a simple switch inside the house.

Small Garden Lighting Ideas

A small garden in London can feel much larger with the right lighting. The trick is to draw the eye upward and outward rather than across. Here is how:

Garden Bar and Outdoor Entertainment Lighting

Outdoor bars and entertainment areas are increasingly popular in London homes. For a garden bar, you want flexible lighting that can shift from practical to atmospheric.

Under-counter LED strip lighting adds a contemporary bar feel. Overhead pendant lights on a weatherproof hanging system create a social atmosphere. Add a separate circuit for outdoor speakers and you have a proper outdoor entertaining space.

Garden Lighting in London and Surrey: What You Should Know

There are a few practical points to consider before installing garden lighting in London or Surrey:

Why Use a Professional Electrician for Garden Lighting?

Any outdoor electrical work including garden lighting must comply with Part P of the Building Regulations. This means it must be designed, installed, and tested by a qualified electrician.

Using a professional also means:

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does professional garden lighting cost in London?

The cost depends on the size of your garden and the type of fittings you choose. A basic pathway and security lighting scheme might start from £800-£1,200 installed. A full bespoke design with uplighting, patio lighting, and smart controls typically ranges from £2,000 to £6,000+. We provide a free design consultation and no-obligation quote.

Do I need planning permission for garden lighting?

For most domestic properties, planning permission is not needed for garden lighting. However, if you live in a conservation area or your property is listed, there may be restrictions. We always check this during the site survey.

Can I install garden lighting myself?

You can fit low-voltage plug-in lights yourself without an electrician. But any mains-powered garden lighting must be installed by a qualified electrician under Part P of the Building Regulations. Using an unqualified person is both dangerous and potentially invalidates your home insurance.

How long does a garden lighting installation take?

A straightforward scheme such as, pathway lights and wall lights, can be completed in a day. A more complex bespoke design with multiple circuits, uplights, and smart controls may take two to three days. We will give you a clear timeline during the design stage.

What is the best colour temperature for garden lighting?

For most outdoor spaces, warm white around 2700K to 3000K is the most versatile choice. It looks natural against brick, stone, planting, and timber. Cooler white (4000K+) can work for security or industrial settings but tends to look harsh in a garden context.

If you rent out a property in London or Surrey, you will have heard the term EICR. But what is it exactly, how much does it cost, and what happens if your property fails?

This guide answers every question landlords ask about EICR certificates. We cover the legal rules, the inspection process, the cost in London, and what to do if the report flags a problem.

Sky Electrical is a NICEIC approved electrical contractor based in Twickenham. We carry out EICR inspections for landlords across South-West London and Surrey.

What Is an EICR Certificate?

An EICR is a formal assessment of the wiring and electrical systems in a building. A qualified electrician carries out the inspection. They check that everything is safe and meets current electrical standards.

At the end of the inspection, the electrician issues a report. This report lists any faults, potential hazards, and recommended improvements. If everything is in good order, the property is awarded a satisfactory EICR certificate.

The term ‘EICR’ stands for Electrical Installation Condition Report. You may also see it called an Electrical Safety Certificate, a Periodic Inspection Report, or an Electrical Safety Check.

Is an EICR Certificate a Legal Requirement for Landlords?

Yes. Since 1 April 2021, all landlords letting properties in England must have a valid EICR. This applies to all types of tenancy, including assured shorthold tenancies, HMOs, and student lets.

The rules come from the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020. Breaking these rules can result in a fine of up to £30,000.

As a landlord, you must:

What Does an EICR Inspection Cover?

A qualified electrician will check the fixed electrical installation in your property. This includes:

The electrician will not test portable appliances such as kettles or televisions. That is a separate inspection called a PAT test. Our testing and certification page, with all related services can be found here.

How Long Does an EICR Certificate Last?

For a private rental property, an EICR is valid for five years. You must renew it before the five years are up.

Here is a quick reference guide:

Property TypeHow Often Required
Private rental propertyEvery 5 years (legal requirement)
HMO (House in Multiple Occupation)Every 5 years (often specified in HMO licence)
Owner-occupied homeEvery 10 years (recommended, not legally required)
Commercial propertyEvery 5 years (recommended best practice)
Swimming poolEvery year

If you buy a property, the previous owner’s EICR does not carry over to you as the landlord. You will need a fresh inspection before new tenants move in.

EICR Certificate Costs in London with Sky Electrical (2026)

The cost of an EICR in London depends on the size of the property and the number of circuits to test. Prices in London are typically higher than the national average due to higher labour costs.

Our EICR costs in the London and Surrey area are as follows:

*(exc. VAT)

See our full pricing guide.

These prices are for the inspection only. If remedial work is needed, there will be an additional cost. Always ask your electrician to give you a clear quote before they start.

Be cautious of very cheap EICR offers. If a price seems too low, the electrician may not be qualified or may rush the inspection. Always use a NICEIC-approved or NAPIT-registered contractor.

EICR Code Categories Explained: C1, C2, C3 and FI

When you receive your EICR, each finding is given a code. Here is what each code means:

CodeMeaningWhat It Means for You
C1: Danger presentImmediate risk to life or propertyRemedial work is required immediately. The electrician may isolate the issue on the day.
C2: Potentially dangerousA fault that could become dangerousRemedial work is required within 28 days.
C3: Improvement recommendedNot dangerous but not idealNo obligation to act, but improvement is recommended.
FI: Further investigationA fault that needs more investigationYou must arrange further testing to determine the cause.

A property with only C3 observations can still receive a satisfactory EICR. A property with C1 or C2 codes receives an unsatisfactory report.

What Happens If Your Property Fails an EICR?

An unsatisfactory EICR (one with C1 or C2 findings) does not mean you cannot let the property. It means you must carry out the remedial work within 28 days.

Once the work is complete, the electrician will issue a Minor Works Certificate or an Electrical Installation Certificate. You should keep this alongside your EICR.

The most common reasons for an EICR failure include:

If installations are required, please take a look at our electrical installations page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an EICR inspection take?

For a typical two or three-bedroom property, an EICR takes between two and four hours. Larger properties or those with complex wiring may take longer. We will give you an estimated time when you book.

Can I use the previous owner’s EICR?

No. An EICR is specific to the person who commissions it. If you purchase a property, you must arrange your own EICR before new tenants move in.

What is the difference between an EICR and a PAT test?

An EICR covers the fixed electrical installation: the wiring, sockets, fuse board, and anything hardwired into the building. A PAT test checks portable appliances such as kettles, laptops, and desk lamps. As a landlord, you need an EICR. A PAT test is separate and optional for most residential landlords.

Does a commercial property need an EICR?

Yes. Commercial properties are not covered by the private rented sector regulations, but the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers to keep electrical systems safe. A five-yearly EICR is best practice for any commercial building.

What qualifications should my electrician have?

Your electrician should be registered with a government-approved scheme such as NICEIC, NAPIT, or ELECSA. Sky Electrical is NICEIC approved, which means all of our engineers are regularly assessed for competency.

Thinking about installing a home EV charger? You’re not alone. EV charger installation is one of the fastest-growing electrical jobs across London and Surrey right now. But many homeowners still have questions. How much does it cost? How long does it take? Do you need a special installer?

This guide answers these questions.

Why Install a Home EV Charger?

Most EV owners charge their cars overnight at home. A standard three-pin socket can do the job, but it is slow and not designed for regular use. A dedicated home EV charger is faster, safer, and far more convenient.

Here is how the two options compare:

A home charger also lets you schedule charging during cheaper overnight electricity tariffs. If you are on an EV-friendly energy tariff, this can cut your charging costs significantly.

What Types of Home EV Charger Are Available?

Most homeowners choose a 7kW smart wallbox. This is the standard for home use in the UK and suits all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Common brands we install include:

Since June 2022, all new home EV chargers installed in the UK must be smart chargers. This means they must be able to schedule charging and respond to grid demand. All chargers we install meet this requirement.

How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost?

This is the question most people ask first. The honest answer: it depends on your property and the charger you choose.

Here is what to expect in London and Surrey:

The cost covers everything: the charger unit, the cable run from your consumer unit, a dedicated circuit, and your completion certificate. There are no hidden extras. You get a free site visit and fixed price before we start. Book your free site visit here.

Is there a grant available?

Yes, in some cases. The OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant gives up to £350 off for people who live in flats or rental properties. Homeowners in houses are not currently eligible for this grant, but renters and flat owners may qualify. We are OZEV approved and can tell you straight away whether you qualify.

What Does EV Charger Installation Involve?

The process is straightforward. Here is what happens from start to finish:

  1. Free site survey We visit your property and assess the best location for the charger, check your consumer unit capacity, and plan the cable route. This is free and takes around 30 to 45 minutes.
  2. Fixed-price quote You get a clear price before we book the job. No surprises.
  3. Installation day Most home EV charger installations take 2 to 4 hours. We:
  1. Completion certificate You receive an electrical completion certificate at the end of the job. This is important for insurance and for any future property sale.

Do You Need Planning Permission for a Home EV Charger?

In most cases, no. Installing an EV charger at home falls under permitted development rights. You do not need to apply for planning permission.

There are a few exceptions:

If you are unsure, we can advise during your free site survey.

Does the Installer Need to Be OZEV Approved?

Yes, if you want to claim a government grant, your installer must be OZEV approved. Sky Electrical is registered on the OZEV installer list, so any eligible customers can apply for their grant when booking with us. To find us on the GOV.UK website, please search our postcode: TW2 5LF in the search bar using this link.

Even without a grant, using an OZEV-approved installer gives you confidence that the job will be done to the correct standard with the right certification. You can view our certifications and accreditations here.

How Long Does Home EV Charger Installation Take?

Most home EV installations are done in a single day, usually in 2 to 4 hours. You do not need to take a full day off work.

Commercial installations or jobs that involve significant cable runs or groundworks may take longer. We will always tell you in advance.

Can I Install an EV Charger Myself?

No. EV charger installation is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. It must be carried out by a qualified, registered electrician. Using an unqualified installer can invalidate your home insurance, your vehicle warranty, and could be dangerous.

All installations by Sky Electrical come with a full electrical certificate and Building Regulations compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does home EV charger installation cost in London? A standard home EV charger installation with Sky Electrical starts from £785 (exc. VAT). This includes the charger unit, all cabling, and your completion certificate. Premium brands start from £999 (exc. VAT). Have a look at our pricing page for more.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for my EV charger? Yes. A home EV charger requires its own dedicated circuit direct from your consumer unit. This ensures safe operation and prevents overloading.

Can I charge my EV on a normal plug socket? You can, but it is very slow and not recommended for daily use. A 13A socket provides 2.3kW and can take over 24 hours to charge most EVs. A 7kW wallbox is much faster and specifically designed for the job.

Will an EV charger affect my electricity bill? An EV charger itself does not cost anything to run, you pay for the electricity you use. If you charge overnight on a smart tariff, the cost per mile can be very low. A typical home EV charger uses around 7kW per hour.

How do I know if my consumer unit can support an EV charger? We check this during your free site survey. Most modern consumer units are fine. If yours needs an upgrade, we will tell you and quote separately.

Is the installation guaranteed? Yes. All electrical work by Sky Electrical comes with a 6-year workmanship guarantee. This is five times the industry standard.
