Why Install Commercial EV Charging?
Electric vehicles now account for a growing share of new car registrations in the UK, and the demand for workplace and destination charging is accelerating. Providing EV charging on your premises for many businesses is a compliance expectation, a staff retention tool, and a competitive advantage.
Sky Electrical designs and installs commercial EV charging infrastructure for businesses of all sizes across London and Surrey. From a two-bay workplace installation to a 40-point car park rollout, we manage the full project from initial survey and DNO application through to commissioning and handover.
Types of Commercial EV Charging
Commercial EV charging covers a wider range of needs than home charging. The right solution depends on who is charging, how long vehicles are parked, and how much power your building can supply.
Workplace Charging for employees
7kW AC smart chargers installed in staff car parks or allocated bays. Employees charge throughout the working day, typically completing a full charge during standard office hours. Smart chargers with RFID cards allow usage tracking and cost allocation per employee or department.
Destination Charging for customers and guests
7kW to 22kW AC chargers installed for retail car parks, hotel car parks, restaurants, and leisure facilities. Destination chargers attract EV-driving customers and extend dwell time. Billing systems allow cost recovery from guests or complimentary charging as an amenity.
Fleet Charging for vans, cars, and mixed fleets
Depot and yard charging for businesses operating electric fleets. Typically 7kW to 22kW AC per bay with load management to share available building capacity across multiple vehicles. Smart systems can schedule overnight charging to take advantage of cheaper off-peak tariffs.
DC Rapid Charging for high-turnover sites
50kW to 150kW DC rapid chargers are appropriate for sites where vehicles park for short periods and need a meaningful charge quickly, such as motorway service areas, logistics hubs, taxi ranks, and public car parks. DC installations require a dedicated DNO connection assessment and are designed and costed on a project basis.

A: PAS 1899:2022 is the UK Government’s publicly available specification for electric vehicle charging systems. Since December 2022, all newly installed EV charge points in England, Scotland, and Wales are required to comply with PAS 1899. The standard covers smart charging functionality (the ability to receive signals from energy suppliers to shift demand), randomised delay to prevent grid peaks, cyber security requirements, and energy management. In practical terms, this means all charge points installed must be smart-capable and meet defined security standards. Every commercial charge point installed by Sky Electrical meets the requirements of PAS 1899:2022 and we provide a compliance confirmation pack on completion.
A: Commercial EV chargers can be configured with several access and billing models. RFID card access allows you to restrict charging to authorised users, with usage logged per card for internal cost allocation. For public or customer-facing chargers, payment can be taken via contactless payment terminals built into the charge point, or via a smartphone app linked to the charging network. Many systems allow you to set a price per kWh, offer complimentary charging with a time limit, or configure different tariffs for staff and visitors. Sky Electrical advises on the most appropriate system for your use case at the site survey stage and manages the full setup and commissioning of the billing and management platform.
